Our department is home to over 50 volunteer fire fighters, 8 full-time staff, and 5 casual staff all of which are under the direction of Chief Bill Crossman, Deputy Chief Brian Farrow, and Deputy Chief Paul Black. The apparatus at the Amherst Fire Department consists of 9 units. Included in this are 3 pumper units, a tanker unit, 70 foot aerial ladder truck, rescue unit, hazardous material unit, utility van, rescue boat, and a fully restored antique 1936 pumper truck which is the pride of the department.
Social Lounge Shifts for the staff consist of 24 hours on, 72 hours off.Within the walls of the building there is a working and social society. The fire fighters are continuously taking training to better educate themselves while also taking time to relax.
Amherst's population is approximately 10,000 residents within town limits. The Amherst Fire Department responds to a large part of the county area also, in total we service approximately 18,000 residents. Amherst Fire Department responds to approximately 300 alarms per year. Along with the Trans Canada Highway and major Rail tracks passing through our town boundaries, we are kept aware of many dangerous situations that could occur.
The Town Council, as well as residents, have committed to supporting the Fire Department for many years. The challenges that face today's fire/emergency services has become so complex that leadership is the single major factor on the continuing growth and stability for the future of the business, yes it is a business. The Amherst Fire Dept is a community based operation catering to many needs of the community.
